Rain Water Harvest System Built at Pentecostal Church Rubago

Reported by Rebero Jean d'Amour, Story written by Amanda Mulder

In August, Water Project volunteers built a Rain Water Harvest System on the Pentecostal Church Rubago. The system is expected to over 500 nearby residents.

Pastor Gilbert, the church leader, told us, "We are blessed to receive this water tank because it is a requirement to have it on church building for the environmental protection. Although this building is not yet completed, we do have activities that need water. On the other hand the church is surrounded by people who have limited access to water taps and they use water from Sake or Mugesera lake at home. Therefore, this tank will store rain water which will be used by the church and neighboring communties."

Location:
Country: Rwanda
District: Ngoma
Sector: Rukumberi
Cell: Rubago
Village: Nyagitabire
Solution:
We place these rainwater collection tanks at centrally-located churches, which shortens the walk for water and improves water quality. Churches sell the water at an affordable rate and use the income to maintain the system. Remaining funds are given to the poorest members of the community for school fees, health insurance, and other basic needs.
