RWHS Built at ADEPR Rukongi

Reported by Rebero Jean d'Amour, Story written by Amanda Mulder

In May, Water Project volunteers build a Rain Water Harvest System at the ADEPR Rukongi Church in Iyantende village. After the installation, our staff spoke with Syslvestre, the President of Youth Services at the church. He told us, "Although there is tap water near the church, water is not regularly available. So, when there is no water, we went to fetch water from Birira Lake to clean the church building and for other activities at the church that need water. This tank will also service neighboring people to find water for domestic use, particularly vulnerable people who don't have money to buy tap water. There are also some people who received SAM3 household filters living near this church who will filter rain water and find safe drinking water."

Location:
Country: Rwanda
District: Ngoma
Sector: Rukumberi
Cell: Ntovi
Village: Iyantende
Solution:
We place these rainwater collection tanks at centrally-located churches, which shortens the walk for water and improves water quality. Churches sell the water at an affordable rate and use the income to maintain the system. Remaining funds are given to the poorest members of the community for school fees, health insurance, and other basic needs.
