75 Household Filters Distributed to Vulnerable Families

Reported by Rebero Jean d'Amour, Story written by Amanda Mulder

In May, Water Project volunteers distributed 75 SAM3 Household Filters to families living in Kavumve village. We spoke with our volunteer Augustin who told us, "People who receive SAM3 filters praised the Lord for those gifts. Before getting SAM3 filters, they used to drink water from Sake Lake which caused sickness and went often to the health center. There is tap water in Kavumve village, however vulnerable people can't afford the price. This poses a health threat especially to children that are more susceptible to waterborne infections as well as threats of drowning in the lakes and rivers when fetching water. This filter will help reduction of diseases because no one will drink dirty water as beneficiaries of filters will drink clean water and will help neighbors without filters to get clean water."

Location:
Country: Rwanda
District: Ngoma
Sector: Rukumberi

Solution:
SAM3 (Sand And Membrane) filters are placed in households for a family and their neighbors. They meet WHO's standards and requires no electricity to function, making it ideal for rural communities. Each family receives extensive training and ongoing volnteer support to maintain the filter for it's 10-year-plus lifespan.
