Construction of Footings for Rain Water Harvest Systems Begins

Reported by Rebero Jean d'Amour, Story written by Amanda Mulder

In May 2019, Water Project staff and volunteers worked with two local churches to begin construction of Rain Water Harvest Systems. In May, volunteers and church members constructed the footings for the Rain Water Harvest Tanks. The systems will be completed in June 2019. The system for the Catholic Church of Karirisi will serve 714 people in the surrounding community. The second system will be located at the ADEPR Church of Rilima. This system will serve an estimated 757 people near the church.

Location:
Country: Rwanda
District: Bugesera
Sector: Rilima
Cell: Kimaranzara
Village: Amizero
Solution:
We place these rainwater collection tanks at centrally-located churches, which shortens the walk for water and improves water quality. Churches sell the water at an affordable rate and use the income to maintain the system. Remaining funds are given to the poorest members of the community for school fees, health insurance, and other basic needs.
