Walk for Water: Jarama

Reported by Consolée UWIMANA, Story written by Margaret Coolman

In July, the Water Project invited the community to join them in officially launching the Water Project in the Jarama Sector by holding a Walk for Water. This event attracted local government and military leaders, local media, village leaders, community health workers, pastors, volunteers, and World Relief Rwanda staff.

At the beginning of the event, participants walked to the lake to collect water from Sake Lake, and returned that water to the AEBR church that was hosting the gathering. At the church, water from the lake was filtered through available SAM3 and SAM2 filters to demonstrate how dirty water can be made clean through the use of these filters. Then, all participants were served water from the filters.

Approximately 1,700 people attended the event, which also included singing, community hygiene training, poems, and speeches from dignitaries. The theme of the day was "Twimakaze Umuco W'Isuku N'Isukura Tunywa Amazi Meza Kuko Ari Asoko Y'Ubuzima". During the event, the first 20 SAM3 filters were distributed to the community.
