Water Project Staff Attended Conference on Community Hygiene Clubs

Reported by Amanda Mulder

In July 2019, Water Project staff attended a two-day workshop to discuss Community Hygiene Clubs in Rilima. The Officer in charge of Hygiene and Sanitation for Rilima attended the meeting. He presented data from the Health Centre for the month of July. During July, Health Workers diagnosed 433 people with severe diarrhea and amoebic dysentery. In addition, Health workers diagnosed 145 individuals with diarrhea of unknown origin. In conclusion, he requested support from partners to meet the challenges of providing sustainable Hygiene and Sanitation in the sector.

Previously, Community Hygiene Clubs were established in each of the 44 villages of Rilima by another NGO. But, since they have stopped actively working in the area, only 19 of those clubs are still active. And, even the active clubs need more resources and support to function sustainably. The Water Project has accepted the challenge of supporting the existing clubs and mobilizing clubs in the areas where clubs have stopped functioning. Over the course of the two-day meeting, a number of action steps were laid out to guide the next steps for all Community Hygiene Clubs in the area.
